Duranta Repens 'Geisha Girl' 

It’s hard to imagine that something so pretty is hardy, but Geisha Girl is bomb-proof.

She’s an extremely hardy, evergreen tall sized shrub with fresh lime-green new growth that deepens on arching branches - but her flowers are the main event.

They appear in sprays of mid-purple with each little flower showing off delicate white edging. The blooms have the most amazing vanilla fragrance that pollinators go crazy for.

Geisha Girl will grow pretty much anywhere so she’s a popular choice for flowering hedges and not-so-great soil. She rocks a container too, but make sure she gets enough to eat and drink in there - its hard work producing all the flowers.

Once established she’s drought-proof, frost-proof, and rarely gets any sort of disease. Cut back by a third after the flowers have faded if you want to keep her at a more manageable height.

• What to use me for: I’m a tough flowering hedge, fill a large container to break up a boring deck, and look stunning in the border.  
• I grow to: I’ll reach 2.5 to 4 metres tall and 2.5 metres wide.
• Where to place me: I like sun and partial shade.
• How far to space me: For a tight-knit hedge I need 1 metre, for anything else around 2 metres is fine.
• Soil Conditions: I’m not fussy, but I appreciate a layer of mulch each year and water during very dry spells.
